What We Do Makes A Difference

Earth Friendly

Earth friendly just means being friendly to nature. We need to be eco friendly to save our environment as well as making it a better place to live. Million tons of waste is produced in the world every day. We can all make little efforts to help our planet. A person being eco friendly helps his surrounding to be less harmful. In simple words, recycling. Recycling waste is essential to both natural environment and humans. Recycling minimizes the need for raw materials so that the Earth can be preserved. Great amounts of energy are used when making products from raw materials. Recycling requires much less energy and therefore helps to preserve natural resources. Know the importance of recycling! Being earth friendly can help our planet a better place to live in.

Recycling

Scrap metal makes up one of the two largest exports. In fact, according to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), there are “150 million metric tons of scrap materials recycled annually including: 81.6 million tons of iron and steel, 5 million tons of aluminum, 1.8 million tons of copper and 2 million tons of stainless steel.

The amount of energy saved in using recycled metals is extensive. The ISRI reports an energy use reduction of 95 percent for aluminum, 85 percent for copper and 74 percent for iron and steel. As far as conservation goes, using recycled goods for metal products can make a big impact. Steel conserves 2500 lbs. of iron ore, 1400 lbs. of coal and 120 lbs. of limestone, while aluminum conserves up to 8 tons bauxite ore and 14 megawatt hours of electricity.

Scrap metal includes ferrous metals (iron and steel) and nonferrous materials (aluminum, copper, tin, brass). Many parts of our home and appliances are made of metals. This includes your gutters. According to RecycleMetal.org, “processing scrap metal to steel instead of virgin ore requires about 74 percent less energy.”

Basic Vehicle Maintenance

The care of our environment is continually becoming more of a concern for all. Vehicle owners are no exception, and in all actuality have more to consider than those without a vehicle. Basic vehicle maintenance will help the overall well being of your car, but will also help the environment. Maintenance follows three timelines: one-time only, several times a year and regularly. We started with the one-time purchase of a high quality gas cap and made a one time read through the vehicle's owner manual. Although we have more exciting things to do then read a manual, it was worth the time.

We keep our vehicles well tuned! We check for worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, and low transmission fluid regulary. We have our wheels aligned and tires rotated. Also we replace the air filter if needed. We have a maintenance schedule and we keep track of everything we have had done on our vehicles. Included in this schedule is our oil, transmission fluid and radiator coolant checks and changes, air conditioner checks, fuel, air and oil filter checks and changes, and finally, our belt and hose checks. Also we check our tire PSI often. Tires with low inflation are dangerous, but also require your car to use more fuel.

A greener oil change!

We change our own oil and we ask for synthetic or re-refined oil. We make sure to dispose of our oil properly by recycling it.

  • A badly tuned car uses almost 10% more gas than a well-tuned car.
  • A failing emissions system can decreased fuel efficiency of up to 7 percent.
  • Driving 2 fewer days per week can save about 143 gallons of gasoline and keep about 2,778 pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere in a year.

Green Web Hosting

“1&1 is proud that their worldwide customers are now part of our 1&1 green coalition, with all hosted websites contributing to offsetting carbon emissions through the support of renewable energy.”-Oliver Mauss, 1&1 Internet CEO

At 1&1, is committed to doing their part to help support renewable energy programs and minimizing the impact that their business has on the environment.

  • Reducing energy.

They want clean energy, and they also want to consume as little energy as possible. Since the start of their first data center nearly 20 years ago, they have been using highly efficient power supplies with less than 20% heat loss, as well as omitting any unnecessary components within their servers. Their data centers around the world are among the most energy efficient data centers in existence. Our combined global initiatives allow us to prevent 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

  • Paperless billing

All billing statements sent to us via e-mail. They have also replaced our welcome packages with information that is available in electronic form. With the thousands of customers like us that join 1&1 each month, this saves a significant amount of paper each year.

  • Responsible office practices

In their corporate offices they participate in the community recycling program, and have chosen reusable kitchen items, as opposed to using paper or plastic cups and utensils.

1&1’s renewable energy purchase for the facility is enough clean energy to power at least 300 U.S. homes for one year!1&1 and BEF work in tandem with Green-e, the nation's leading voluntary certification program for renewable energy, to power their data center with clean, renewable energy. Green-e certifies renewable energy that meets environmental and consumer protection standards that it developed in conjunction with leading environmental, energy and policy organizations.
